US Weekly - Gwen's pregnancy
|
|
For a style icon known for showing off her rock-hard abs in midriff baring get-ups, lately Gwen Stefani's wardrobe has
been uncharacteristically conservative. At the 33rd annual American Music Awards on November 22, she took the stage in a blazer
and jeans. Two weeks later, at the Billboard Music Awards, she walked the red carpet in a draped YSL gown before performing
"Luxurious" in a mod, empire-waisted frock. And during a December 18 concert at Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville
she dressed in a belly-camoflaging ruffled skirt. What's the message behind the new fashion statement? Us has learned that
Stefani, 36, and her husband of three years, Gavin Rossdale, 38, are expecting their first child in June. "We are delighted!"
Rossdales father, Douglas, a retired doctor in London, tells Us. (When Us asked Stefani's mom, Patti, an Anaheim, California,
homemaker, if she was excited, she said, "Yes, but I don't do interviews.") "I am so happy for her," Fergie of the Black Eyed
Peas (which opened for Stefani on part of her tour) tells Us. "What a beautiful child they will have." With Stefani's 2005
Harajuku Lovers tour wrapping on December 21 and No Doubt on a break, the timing couldn't be better for the singer-designer
to focus on motherhood. "She was trying to wait until after the tour to start trying [to concieve]," says the insider, "but
was pleasantly surprised that she got pregnant sooner." Indeed, Stefani has said that having a baby has been a goal "since
I was 9 years old." No Doubt fans are familiar with her baby lust. In the 2000 hit "Simple Kind of Life," she sang, "I always
thought I'd be a mom/Sometimes I wish for a mistake." In August, with her biological clock ticking (something she alluded
to with the "tick tock" refrain in her song "What You Waiting For?"), she admitted, "I never thought I wouldn't have a kid
by now." (Her rep did not return calls for comment on the pregnancy.) While this will be Stefani's first child, a 2004
DNA test revealed that Rossdale fathered a love child with his longtime pal Pearl Lowe. (She says her daughter, Daisy, now
16, is not in contact with the Bush frontman. His rep did not return calls.) Still, Stefani----who has never publicly spoken
of the scandal---has high hopes for her hubby. "I think Gavin's going to be the most incredible dad," she has said. Now
that her dream is coming true, Stefani seems to be doing all she can to ensure a smooth pregnancy. During her Nashville tour
stop, the singer drank only water and requested healthy fare, a staffer at the arena tells Us. "She had the head chef steam
five salmon patties, Brussels sprouts and green beans," says the source. "There was absoloutely no seasoning. And nobody else
was allowed to eat her food." And though she may not be bouncing around onstage for a while , with two clothing lines,
L.A.M.B. and Harajuku Lovers, Stefani---who splits her time between homes in L.A. and London----will be plenty busy. "Designing
is something I think I can do for the rest of my life," she has said. "It's maybe the kind of thing I will concentrate on
fully when I have a family." One thing is for sure: Her next creation is already a hit. "They have been wanting this forever,"
a close source tells Us of the proud parents-to-be. "This is a dream come true. They are both thrilled!"
The whole
article is 2 pages with a big pic of Gwen from the Billboard Awards in the middle, a small pic of G&G after Gwen's fashion
show, and comparison pics of her wardrobe from before and on this tour. The caption reads: "Stefani bare-bellied in May (left),
and concealed during a December 14 concert in Paris. "[Her pregnancy] is so obvious," one source says. "She's totally covered
up!" And then they have the same quote in a big pink circle about how Gwen's says having children will save her from her vanity.
There's also another blurb asking if it will change her empire, but it's not really worth typing up. There's a small pic of
her on the contents page too.
